SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE GUIDE AND INFORMATION

Grade 6 – Mrs. Sheila Lobel

Welcome to sixth grade! You will learn many new things this year in Social Studies and I am sure you’ll find this to be an interesting class. We’ll explore fascinating civilizations and complete many exciting activities in and out of the classroom. You will also see your skills as a student improve because study skills will be taught along with factual information.

CURRICULUM:

Geography, Prehistory

Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome

Major Religions of the World

The Middle Ages and the Renaissance

Reformation, Revolutions

Immigration, World War I, World War II

In addition, Study Skills will be taught and reinforced throughout the year in this class, including Cornell Notetaking, highlighting, organizational tools, and test preparation.

CLASSWORK:

Students should come to class with a Social Studies binder, Agenda Book, pen and homework (in the Homework Folder) each day. We will not use the text book very often. Students will be told when it is necessary to bring it to class. Covered text books should be kept in lockers. All Social Studies work should be completed in ink, with a proper heading on all papers. Good writing skills should always be used, including proper sentence structure and punctuation. Organization, responsibility, and independent learning will be reinforced throughout the year.

HOMEWORK:

Students will have some homework nearly every night. Many assignments will be given in advance so students can choose a convenient time to complete them. If a student has hours of Social Studies homework, please ask when the assignment was given. I do not assign hours of homework. Each student should have two or three Homework Buddies for the clarification of assignments.

BLACKBOARD (WEBSITE): I update my personal website each week. On this website you will find the week’s goals and assignments. This is a great way for students and parents to keep informed of what’s happening in the Social Studies classroom and what homework is due that week. In addition, study materials and other resources are often included on my website.

AGENDA BOOKS:

Every Grade 6 student is expected to carry his/her Agenda Book back and forth between school and home daily. All assigned work should be recorded and students should check off assignments as completed. Parents should regularly read the Agenda Book to keep informed of classroom work. Teachers may write notes to parents and parents may write back in Agenda Books. It is the student’s responsibility to show the teacher and/or parent notes written in the Agenda Book.

ABSENCES:

If students are out, they should contact a homework buddy. If parents call the Middle School office before 9 AM on the day of the absence, Team 6 will leave assignments in the MS office for pick up after 2:30 PM. Another source of information is the Homework Hotline (446-4000 X9936) which is updated every afternoon with the day’s assignments.

GRADING POLICY:

Exams and projects make up sixty percent of the grade. Homework, class work & participation make up 40%. Full credit is awarded when homework is in class on the due date. Homework handed in later in the day or the next day will receive partial credit, except in the case of an absence. Students out of class due to music lessons should hand in homework by the end of the day for full credit. Students are responsible for any work missed during lessons and are expected to complete that night’s homework.

FOR ASSISTANCE:

I am available after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Parents and students are encouraged to keep in touch with me to share any concerns or questions. I check my e-mail daily, so that’s the best way to contact me: lobel@vcsdk12.org. I look forward to working with all of you this year.
