What's New?

Northeast Regional Forensic Institute (NERFI) at the University at Albany:

NERFI provides hands-on classroom and laboratory training for Forensic Scientists and Senior Laboratory Technicians at the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center in an intensive 12-week program.

Currently, two students are participating in this internship program with great success.  The students have aided NERFI in completing administrative assistant duties, but have also gained valuable experience in the laboratory.  They have processed a mock case from start to finish and have obtained DNA profiles for analysis.  Following nationally accepted protocols, the students have extracted DNA from mock samples, quantified the DNA to see how much DNA was present in the sample, amplified (copied) the DNA for further analysis, and obtained profiles from each mock evidence item using a genetic analyzer and computer software.  Both interns plan on majoring in forensics next year at college.

Below is a picture of the two interns (Emily Hesselbacher and Jon Fuglein):

Below is a picture of Emily and Jon with their mentors Ashley Hart and Jessica Buckenberger (graduate students in the Forensic Molecular Biology program at the University).  Both Ashley and Jessica are student Administrative Assistants for NERFI.  They are posing in front of a genetic analyzer in the University at Albany NERFI DNA laboratory.

Junior Achievement Goundhog Day Job Shadow Program:

On Wednesday, April 18, CEIP interns went to Sawchuk, Brown Associates in Downtown Albany.  We had such a busy and productive day!  We were briefed about Sawchuk Brown's history including the differences between advertising and public relations.  We were also able to job shadow employees for part of the morning.

While we were there, we were able to attend a press conference for the new Key Bank Financial Education Center on South Pearl Street.  At the event, we learned how a press conference is conducted including dealing with the press and other guests.  We were also able to meet Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings and Albany County Executive Mike Breslin.  Both took the time to speak with us and encouraged the interns to continue their good work at their internships, as well as to always network with people they met (like at this event).  The Mayor even suggested that the interns should one day shadow him...something that we'll look into!  Click here for pictures.

Guest Speakers:

Networking, communicating and listening to others is extremely important.  So far, we have had three guest speakers this semester:
