: Introduction to art room, rules, receive portfolios, and art seats.Assessment self-portrait: Review: What is a self portrait? Create crayon self portrait.
Paper Quilt Pattern: Introduce a nine-patch quilt and the quilting artist Annie Brooks. Discuss pattern and symmetry. Using construction paper, create nine-patch pattern for quilt.
Aboriginal Bark Painting: Introduce the artist Mike Gubaru and his aboriginal bark paintings. Discuss the story and patterns found in the painting. Create aboriginal animal design. Using water paint, paint aboriginal animal. Resist technique.
Leaf Printing: Discuss: What is a print? Introduce warm and cool colors. Create leaf prints using warm and cool colors.
Mom Sketch Introduce: What is a sketch? Discuss the shapes found in the face. Create sketch of human face.
Surprise Mother’s Day Portrait: Using our knowledge about the human face, create a portrait of our moms. Discuss the different parts of the face and what shapes we can find in it. Using crayons, color portrait and add pattern frame. Attach magnets. (Sent home for Mother’s Day.)
Native American Headbands: Discuss the Native American Pueblo tribe. Create headband for classroom feast. (Sent home.)
Chameleons: Read book, Chameleons are Cool, by Martin Jenkins. Discuss the different shapes, texture and patterns that can be found on a chameleon. Draw a unique chameleon with different designs. Using oil pastels, color in chameleons. Add background.
Color Blends: Introduce complementary colors (colors opposite each other on the color wheel) and demonstrate how the make brown when mixed. Working with a friend, create a color blends using pairs of complimentary color.
Henri Matisse Collage: Introduce the artist Henri Matisse and his paper collages. Using the color blend papers, create different shapes for our own collages.
Louise Nevelson Sculpture: Introduce the sculptor Louise Nevelson and her wood assemblages. Introduce the three dimensions: height, width and depth. Using wood pieces, create a wooden sculpture. Paint sculpture using tempera paint.
Earth Day Bags: Decorate a paper bag with a message of how to help the Earth. Displayed at Nichol’s Market.
Father’s Day Paper Weights: Discuss Indian Red clay. Role a slab out of Indian Red clay. Change into baseball, basketball, or football. Paint paper weight using tempera paint. (Vocabulary: slip, smooth, wedge) (Sent home for Father’s Day.)
Origami Whale: Introduce origami (the Japanese art of paper folding). Using the origami technique, create a paper whale. Add collage background.
Self portrait: Review: What is a self portrait? Using the knowledge that we have gained throughout the school year, create a self-portrait. Compare Septembers self portrait to May’s self portrait.
Swimmy: Read the book, Swimmy, by Leo Lionni. Discuss his illustrations. Using sponges, create a stamp. Make fish prints on blue background paper. Add details.
